loginAt the present time Condensed Matter Physics is the largest of the main subdivisions of physics. Forseveral years the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Solid State Physics has been one of the principal referenceworks in this area, but unfortunately until now it was only available in the Russian language. Its appearancein English is indeed long overdue. It has been a great pleasure for me to undertake the task of editing theEnglish language edition. This two-volume work contains a great deal of material ordinarily not found inthe solid state texts that are most often consulted for reference purposes, such as accounts of acousticalholography, bistability, Kosterlitz–Thouless transition, and self-similarity. It provides information on ma-terials rarely discussed in these standard texts, such as austenite, ferrofluids, intercalated compounds, lasermaterials, Laves phases, nematic liquid crystals, etc. Properties of many quasi-particles are presented; forexample, those of crowdions, dopplerons, magnons, solitons, vacancions, and weavons. The volumes arefully cross-referenced for tracking down allaspects of a topic, and in thisrespect we have emulated theexcellent cross-referencing systematics of the Russian original. Long lists of alternate titles for looking upsubjects can considerably shorten the time needed to find specialized information.
