Richard Tomlinson introduces a representative selection of Greek and Romancities, looking specifically at their architectural remains. They are chosen fortheir importance to our understanding of the evolution of the city-form, eitherbecause they were already important in antiquity, or because the quality ofthe remains makes them particularly interesting. Thus the survey includesearly places which failed to develop, places which were major, dominantcities in their own time, and others which were never more than ordinary butwhich through accident (for example the eruption of Vesuvius at Pompeii)have left especially significant remains. This is more than a book about pure ancient architecture: rather it isarchitecture in its social context—showing how architecture is a part of historyrather than an aesthetic topic to be treated in isolation. Tomlinson emphasiseshow the form and arrangement of different building types persist or developin response to differing circumstances.Richard Tomlinson is Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology atthe University of Birmingham.
