loginIt is generally recognized that efforts at transliterating North Africanvernacular terms and proper names and places, whether Berber or Ara-bic, present a real challenge for nonnative speakers of North Africanlanguages. To make sense of these terms, I have followed the conven-tions of the International Journal of Middle East Studies. For Arabicand Berber, the consonant khis pronounced as in Bachand ghas theFrench r. The Arabic ‘ainhas been rendered with ‘,and the hamza, theglottal stop diacritical mark, with `. Place-names and common propernames with English and French spellings appear as they do in Englishand French and are not transliterated. Thus, ksar, not qsar or al-qasr;Qur’an, not Quran
