Part of the Renaissance was, as its name denotes, a “rebirth,” reachingback to recover and revive the great accomplishments of Ancient Romeand Greece. There was even a glance further back, to the time of theBible, both the New and the Old Testaments, with the urge for more ex-act translation from Greek and Hebrew. Had it been nothing more thanthis harking back and rediscovering, the Renaissance would have beena memorable period. But its impulse was so great and its momentum sostrong that it carried on with new, pathbreaking discoveries, concepts, and inventions, producing some of the world’s most extraordinary artand architecture, literature and music, and marking major turning pointsin religion, philosophy, and science. Its impact on the economy, politics, and social relations was equally impressive. Indeed, so much happened,in such a short span, and in a fairly small area, that it is hard to believeand hard to encompass in one volume.
