In all the texts transcribed for and printed in this volume, our practice is to modernize capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Where orthographic variety can help to illuminate the development of racial vocabularies, early modern spelling is retained but in general spelling is modernized, and always in the cases of u/v, i/j, vv/w, and long s (l); words condensed with macrons are expanded; and words spelled with the Middle English thorn (used to represent the voiceless dental fricative) are modernized with the digraph th.Where foreign words without conventional English spellings appear (such as proper names and place names), they are kept in their original spelling and italicized. Foreign words, words not found in a standard college English dic-tionary, as well as archaic words or usages are glossed in footnotes. Additional annotation in footnotes includes information on textual variants suggestive for questions of race and cross-references to related texts not included in the current volume. Where unmistakable printer’s errors appear (omissions, obfuscating misspellings), substantial emendations or editorial additions to the text are indicated by square brackets. In selecting our copy texts, we do not always use the earliest edition avail-able. It is important to clarify that the aim of this documentary companion is not to provide new or authoritative editions of each of these materials, although we hope that it will inspire future projects for the editing of indi-vidual texts.
