For more than a hundred years many socialists believed, and manyof their opponents feared, that Marx had been right: capitalism wasdoomed and would be replaced by socialism. How things havechanged! In recent years, and particularly since the collapse of theSoviet bloc between 1989 and 1991, a dramatic reversal has takenplace. It is now capitalism that is triumphant, and many regardsocialism as an historical relic which will probably die out duringthe course of the current century. I do not share this belief, and thefinal chapter of this book seeks to demonstrate the continuing andcontemporary relevance of socialism. But whether or not the readerwill agree with this conclusion, I hope that the book will at leastprovide clarification and discussion as a basis for judgement
